Our Directors

Beth Bruce

Beth joined Sweet Adelines in 1971 and has been busy ever since! She is a multi-talented lady who graciously shares her talents and expertise with many people. She is a certified director, a private vocal teacher and coach. Beth is also on the Sweet Adeline International judging program. She directed the award-winning Idaho Falls Chorus for more than ten years. Beth has sung lead and tenor in several award-winning barbershop quartets over the years and is an outstanding soloist.

Beth Bruce's teaching experience includes a rewarding career as an Elementary Music Specialist K-6. She shares her love of music and harmony with her students at Parkside Elementary School. Beth received the MENC/SAI Music Educator Award in 1998 for her musical contributions and devoted service.

Besides teaching private vocal lessons in her own studio, Beth directs the Cathedral Choir at the First Baptist Church in Salt Lake City. She also contributes a great deal to her new position as the director for the Beehive Statesmen. She is also the Mountain Jubilee chorus' Associate Director. When she is not directing, she is singing tenor with NEW DAY, the current 2006 Third Place Regional Quartet finalists.

Beth joined the Beehive Statesmen as Music Director in June, 2006, and has had an immediate impact on the quality of our singing. Under her baton, the Beehive Statesmen placed 5th in the Rocky Mountain District's Fall 2006 Chorus Contest, winning the Most Improved Chorus award.

Rex Bailey

Rex Bailey, one of our Assistant Directors, has been a Barbershopper for 12 years, and has served the Beehive Statesmen as Editor of The Buzz, and currently as Secretary. He is the Bass Lead for the Chorus, and is also serving as a member of the Music Committee. He is looking forward to going to Director's College at the Society's Harmony University next summer.

Jan Vanderhooft

Jan Vanderhooft (Lead), our newest Assistant Director, has sung tenor in choirs most of his life. In December, 1998, a couple of barbershoppers showed him their craft. They had Jan sing the melody to a few Christmas songs while they harmonized with him on the spot. He was hopelessly hooked on barbershop immediately.

Since then, Jan has sung in two choruses, four quartets, and directs his church choir. I guess he can't get enough of that singing. Jan has also attended the Society's Harmony University four times. In the summer of 2007, he went there on a Directors College scholarship and earned his level 2 Directors Certification.

It is obvious to all around him that Jan is enthusiastic about barbershop singing. So it stands to reason that the Beehive Statesmen Chorus is enthusiastic about our newest assistant director.
