  3. JULY RETREAT NOTES  (Beth)               Coaches were  – Anna-Lisa Glad and Tori Postma

Notes:  ATTITUDE is everything!!  Buy into the plan.  For our contest tunes, we have selected
I Wanna Be A Front Row Man and I’ll Be Seeing You for our contest tunes.

Front Row Man:  Key of A now.

INTRO:  Begin with the front row idea on a pedestal and then with more reverence.  Character all the time!   Two big crescendos in the intro.  Basses – ‘that’s where’ stay UP.

VERSE: Tone flow throughout.  “Barbershop accent” Third row – Wave!  I’m resigned… look the part.  Change for : ‘Our leader is quite a director.’  Ennunciate PLIGHT.  Shine the light.  Moves  and dynamics.

CHORUS: Box step on ‘doin all the steps that I can’ then – bow and arms up for wow. Silly face in M. 33.  Move on ‘cookin’    Box step again in M. 40.   M. 42 leads sing repeated note on double.     Point in m42, sweep right on 43 and both hands on m. 44.

    M. 47   Replace the word "ME" (with the swipe) with ‘IF she could ONly see" then moving to the
    second pitch
"SOMEone like ME!’ which sets stomp tempo for "even if I'm . . . Clark steps up.  Silly silly silly
    M. 53 7th chord (Tenors).  Basses sing the chromatics also.  Leads sing Eb in m 56 and 57 .  Baris sing Bb, C and stay on C in M. 57.  Tenors join Basses on hang out until the echo.

I'LL BE SEEING YOU:   Beautiful tone quality.  Both Anna-Lisa and Tori loved how the chorus sounds on this song.  Please check all of your notes in both songs, but do take a look at m. 39 in this ballad.   Page three needs the most work on chord clarity.  We have a few interp changes that we will work on together.  Be prepared for a new breathing pattern.   All of our work on vowels is really paying off!!    One hand up at the end.  Use body language throughout this lovely ballad.  Sing the meaning of the lyrics.

What a great retreat!  Thanks to all who did the work to set it up.  And thank you to all who came and made it such a success.  I’m proud to be your director!  Beth  (Italics:  webmaster)

  5. VOLUNTEER FOR HOSTING:  Our Chapter will HOST the RMD Fall 2010 Convention and Chorus Contest, to be held in Layton, Utah on September 24th and 25th.   There are over 100 3-hour shifts that we need to cover during the two day period.   We will need you to take Friday off from work, and volunteer for one shift on Friday and one Shift on Saturday (which will be tricky, because we will be involved in the Chorus Contest on Saturday.)   We will need to have our spouses volunteer for some shifts, also.

Here is a PRELIMINARY listing of AREAS and HOST NEEDS and DUTIES:

RISERS:     6 able-bodied Members to handle Setting Up,  Resetting, and Striking the
Risers,  at various times during Friday and Saturday.

JUDGES:    4-6   Transportation to/from Airport, between hotel and venue, supply
"GREEN" room,  print Contest Scoring sheets

BACKSTAGE:   6 Hosts for each of the Events, who will assist in the flow of the quartets
from their warm-up room in the SR Hall to the Stage, then back to the
                          Hall.
Friday:       Afternoon Quartet Walk-on, and evening Contest
Saturday:   Morning Chorus Walk-on**, and noontime Contest**
and evening Quartet Final, and Show of Champions

CHORUS HOSTS:   5 Hosts for Saturday Morning**, to maintain the flow of the choruses
through their assigned rehearsal rooms, and then to the Venue.

BOX OFFICE:    2-4 to man Ticket Booth for Individual Event Tickets

USHERS:        6 Hosts to guard and close the auditorum doors during the Contest, and
2 SHUSHERS to maintain noise control at the main entrance,   for each of
the three Contest Events.   These Hosts will also check Registration
Badges or collect Individual Event Tickets for each Contest and the Show.

Hopefully,  we can assign couples together whenever possible.

** Because the Chorus will be Competing on Saturday Morning,  these shifts will need
to be manned by Spouse, older teen-agers, friends, etc.

OUR CULTURE

These CONCEPTS, when internalized, define our CHORUS      (Submitted by:  Scott Allred)

We are having a great time.  We sing great.  Beth is a wonderful Director
                 We are a Singing Group;  Sacred Risers;  Performance Rehearsals;
                 Believe;   Have Confidence;  BUY IN.

Ø  Ownership

I accept and affirm that I am responsible for my actions as a member of the chorus and its outcome.   I buy into the 7 points of culture and see that it creates an environment were all members of the chorus, my brothers, can thrive.  While on the risers; I own the space under my feet and responsible only for that space.  My space is ‘sacred ground’.  I do not have the responsibility or authority to correct my chorus brothers for their perceived infractions or to converse, discuss what I believe is an important matter.  I only speak with loving eyes.  While off the risers, I can be playful and goofy.

Ø   Team Work

I focus my attention on the successful outcome of the entire chorus.  I believe in the Beehive ‘Swarm’ (blob), which is the belief that my brothers in the chorus will figure out what they did incorrectly or didn’t do correctly, without my input, by following the loving ‘Swarm’.  My team of brothers has the skills necessary to follow and add to his section and chorus, to become a part of the ‘Swarm’.  I will display pride, competence, and personal confidence at all times.  If asked, I will coach and lead others in the section or chorus.  I will ask for help while off the risers when I need it and not drag the chorus down because I fear to ask. I will seek for and feel the influence of the ‘Swarm’.

          Singing Group

I believe the Statesmen are a singing group, not a fraternity group that likes to sing.  Meaning that fellowship, service, refreshements, brotherhood, and other business are by-products of our barbershop harmony singing art, not the other way around.j   I sing as if one with the Chorus.   I don't sing to "carry" the others in my section.   I believe that there are no heroes in the Chorus.  I seek for vocal quality in my section and in the Chorus

            REHEARSALS

I take our rehearsals seriously.  It is
silly to believve that I can TURN IT ON for a performance.   I rehearse like a musician; stand like a champion; perform like a professional, with a Statesmen 'swagger.'   I believe that everything that happens is because I know and trust the PLAN.   I come weekly and on time.   I call to let others know if I am going to miss a rehearsal.  If I am late, or leave the risers during rehearsal, I will wait for an invitiation to join the Chorus, and take my appointed, sacred space.

            BELIEF

I believe in my Director, and trust that she know what is best for the Chorus.   I trust the Director's plan and know that she will teach us and take the Cjhorus far towards its goal.   I believe my Chorus brothers will do their best, and follow the same poionts of 'culture' as I do.  I love my membership in the Chorus.  I believe I contribute to the Chorus; my energy and support makes the Chorus better as a whole.

             MUSICALITY

I will sing the words and notes correctly as written, or as modified by our Director.    Lyrics, word/vowel ceation, harmony, temp, tone flow, proper mouth position, and wall of sound singing is imporatnt to me, and I strive to sing the barbershop style at all times.   Again,  I trust our Director.  I sing from the heart and others can feel it.   I love to 'lock & ring.'

             PRESENTATION

My singing is believable and creates a mood for the listener.  I perform with energy and my facial expressions display my love for barbershop harmony.   I maintain character no matter what is going on around me.  I know my presentation is suitable to the audience and believe the Statesmen will not ask me to do something that I don;t have the ability to perform.  I keep my uniforms clean and presentable.

MUSIC PLAN

GENERAL:          Warm up your voices on the way to rehearsal.

Remember:  Air, Space, Energy, Support, Flex, Lift, Resonance
Head voice and character,  VOWEL Sounds,  Warm-ups, POSTURE
High wide chest -- Breath,  and RESET (with smile) on EVERY breath.

Bring ALL of your 2010 Summer music to each Rehearsal.

Whenever we work on any of our former music, remember to apply all the techniques that our Director has been working so hard to instill in us.   It will be hard to break the old habits that were formed when you first learned a song; so keep working on Vowel Sound formations, lifting your palate, using the barbershop accent,  LISTENING to the other parts, unifying the sound from your section, soften the high notes - especially if you are singing above the MELODY.
